This is a demo of the Dojo open source toolkit widget set, being used to create a sample application and showing how that works for low vision users that may use high contrast mode in Windows. We will start off in normal mode, what we see is a sample application with a toolbar at the top of the page, below that we have a tab panel, in this case we are displaying one tab, which is the inbox. Within that tab panel it is split into three panes. Vertically on the left what we see is a folders view that has a tree of listed applications, that actually is an accordion panel. So folders is currently viewed and if you see on the lower left the address book is the other option for the accordion panel. Taking up the right hand side of the screen are two panes, one is the folder view, as well as the preview pane. So this is all fine, we can see it in normal mode. I am going to turn on high contrast mode on my windows operating system. I will need to refresh as Firefox 2 currently requires us to refresh the page when we switch into high contrast mode. Notice originally the toolbar on the top was composed of pictures and words, in order to have great performance Dojo uses background images for many of the pictures, unfortunately those do not display when we are in high contrast mode. Images can be problematic because sometimes they use colours that people can't easily see. So what we have done is make sure that all those images will have an alternative text for them. So what we see if we go to the Get Mail and hover over that with the mouse, we see the tool tip which is displayed which tells me what that toolbar end does, it would be quicker to download new mail. If I go across to the new message, we can click to compose a new message. So we have our tooltips displayed and they are visible in high contrast mode. We can see the inbox, we can click on the folders, we can click on address book to open that. We can pick on a list and it is updated with a list of items from Bob Baxter. I can open folders and click on that pane; I can open and close the different folders, but let's go look at create a new message. If we create a new message, we didn't see the Rich Text editor in normal mode, but we see the Rich Text editor here. If I click on the To field and press the down arrow I get a list of items that I have sent mail to previously. I can click on one of those to pick them. I can enter a subject of I can pick a subject. We have the Rich Text toolbar. This toolbar of undo, redo, cut, copy, paste, bold, italic, underline; these are all toolbars that are normally represented as images, but here in High Contrast mode they are here as text alternatives. They are still usable, even though a lot of the colour has been removed. I am going to send this message even though we have no text. You will see that we have a progress bar that is also in High Contrast mode. The new message box is removed and we are back in the inbox pane. I am going to shift back out of High Contrast mode, just so that you can see the difference with the Rich Text editor. Refresh the page. I am going to click the message again, so that you can see the difference in the toolbox. The standard mode the toolbar is composed of images, but as we saw in High Contrast mode those images are replaced with the text equivalent. So we are doing as much as we can to make sure that the Dojo widget set is useable to low vision users who may need to increase the font size or work in High Contrast mode. End of transcript.
